Dark Horse Designs

The way we wear the world is as elegant as the way the world looks on us.
Accessories are a necessity and donning the right look for the right mood is all in the ring.

Have the conviction of your perspective.
It doesn't matter what other people think if you are confident with who you are.

Last Weekend

To the memorable and the tolerable, the informative and the decorative - in the grace swooning from Lands of Grace, I thank you.  From the perspective of a wee informant, and dressed to impress were the rest, I thank you.
Belt buckles, one piece sock suits, lips stick, lip curls and curled bangs.... what a tour in our own back yard.  And all I did was show up for work.

Part Two, Swinging Motown

The Chantrelles

I watch a bat quickly crawl underneath the black curtain that’s hanging on the brick wall at the front of the bar beside the front door. The lit up Striegl beer sign points my eyes back to the stage.  The Casbah http://www.casbahbar.com/ is swinging tonight.
A woman next to me shouts out, Motown in Collingwood!

I smile and levitate with her excitement.  I came here to support a friend’s cousin’s band from the West Coast, but I had no idea what to expect.
The lead singer is a vibrant young, red-hot Aretha Franklin with a heavy beaded voice and hips you move with.   Accompanied by a trumpet, saxophone, guitars, drums and key board, they are a bands band.  I have so much empathy for them in this room right now.  I don’t know if this is what I want to say but my admiration is accompanied by what I feel. Respect. I am pounded, strummed, ripped and pulled; my heart compresses with the base and my soul braids the music between the notes and chorus.  If I had a bad day, I can’t feel it anymore.  I am put back together again. Smiling and singing along with this gyrating room. I imagine what the view must look like from the top of their stage and I like our likeness of how we all beam.

I’m not sure where I fit in in this scene - if I am the singer, the dancer or the instrument, but I have my pen and book to find out.

Part One, Blues and Soul

The ornate design of life looks like a silver ring stroking the strings of a guitar.   Enmeshed with sounds coming from the lungs of music, hosted by pleated dusty pant legs and polished worn through boot heels, its voice sings like a bluesy lullaby.  An instrumental solo and boom boom create the foundation for a melodic baritone soul.
Rick Taylor, ladies and gentlemen. http://www.ricktaylormusic.com

This room was packed when I was working, but now that I stand at the end of the bar and absorb the dimly lit scene that is the colour of a gilded bruise, I see only a few people still here - The couple at a high top speak as if they are long-time friends with hidden pasts as two other unsullied lovers rest their elbows close together.  The evening falls to the floor.

I drink Taylor’s voice like fermented syrup laced with thorns, tasting-oh-so-good as it catches the back of my throat.  I lean forward and he drags me willfully and I catch my breath, swallowing for the first time his sweet and sultry sticky soul.  This moment is magic.
We are all tourists today, and we all are held captive at the sight and sound of Rick Taylor.

Here is that pointillism piece I couldn’t remember.

“A Sunday on Law Grande Jatte” by Georges Seurat.  I remember being blown away by it when I saw it at the Art Institute of Chicago not only because of its beauty but also because of the canvas size (it’s about 80” by 120”).  - P.R.

I received a note from the Universe and it kinda made a lot of sense:

    You know how the wind, no matter how blustery, remains as silent as it is invisible, until it meets with leaves, and kites, and flags, and such?
Well, Andrea , it's exactly the same with the manifesting forces that make dreams come true, until they meet with expectation.
And right this second, they're whirling all around you, my little chiquita.
Happy everything  -

(A Conversation with a Man)

MORALITY IN THE BACKWOODS

Traversing on sheets of morality
blazing with uncertainty and distraction,
she is blinded with affection
as he guides her intention -

I get it now.  Bit slow out here in the backwoods.

He may sleep next to her skin,
breathing repair into his routine
but in the morning when cologne is his exit,
she hears him say years down the road,

Used to PLAY AROUND A LOT.

She ingests the dust of his scent,
he continues –

Very seldom invite them into my life,
They usually do it themselves.

She remembers she left first
after he found work and they were
bad timing and boundaries-

No respect for boundaries.

Stealing calicoes and unpredictable forbidden territory,
she smiles into herself –

Anyways, this one’s movin on.

He is as permanent as his sweat;
as misleading as his smell
and as unforgettable as his behaviour.

Today's Tree:

my little trees
so they please
the way i see the world;
i am on a path
aligned with leaves
in order to feel the world;
i am on my knees
beckoning a breeze
growing into the soil of the world;
i am grateful, at ease
believing what i see
admiring the view of the world.

Where we live
is what we grow
flaunting feathers
proud to show,
the finest of  whites
old souls in young vines
at the height of our hills
grapes turned into wines;
We sing with our palates
paired with elegant views
rewarding our senses
with summer virtues;
What an experience
to share with friends,
the vineyard
in our own backyard.

MyTrees:

We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with sleep - W.Shakespeare

I woke up dreaming about a future show.  In the Fall of 2013, PomonaLIFE is coming to The Dufferin County Museum and Archive.  I will be working with a crew of exceptionally passionate artists from various backgrounds and disciplines.  We are putting an installation piece in this magnificent building.

I am still rubbing my feet against the ground, thinking about these dreams I had.

I rewind: There is this voice inside my head that isn't mine. I don't know if these are my eyes either, as I tour through this place in my head.  I see art, hanging like tapestries and I see trees like a forest under a roof in a house that looks like a barn.  I see black and white photographs of portraits (head shots of men wearing suits hanging from thin shoulders and straw faces.) I hear laughter and glasses clinking together, but this room in this building is empty.  Dim golden lights shine from some place like invisible flashlights on motion sensors and they light my way with each step I take.  I am accompanied by no one except a presence I can't explain.  I have a serene smile and a glow but I don't have a body to walk in.

I had a pen in my hand when I woke up, as if in my sleep I reached for my book before I was consciously aware of what I was doing. I wrote down nouns and continued to rub my feet together while coiled up in my bed sheets.  A part of me is still wrapped up in the cotton and a note pad.

I'm missing a piece, but not for long.  It's all about to come together.

Positive Food:

In our everyday encounters, whether we realize it or not, we are influenced by what isn't said: Looks, gestures, body language; misdirected energy and ill-willed thoughts floating in the minds of settlers are like invisible pits of quicksand to innocent by-standers. Don’t be a negative-thought-projecting-black hole, it’s rude.

Writing worlds from transient thoughts
I am placed at home
with memories and their sounds like creaking trunks swaying to the winds
shaking hands with the forest of my childhood;
Lest we forget,
furthering our days forward into these silhouetted memories
at dusk,
I am as tall as the highest tree
planted firmly in the ground.

Crimson and Clover - Tommy James and the Shondells

365 Days Back to Summer

Sunny deck days and sweaty brows
Enjoying the glow of work
Making fun in the appearance of have-to's,
Nothing had-to, just was;
Summer days of last years memorable heat
And the company of feeling the love of just being
In this presence of heat.

Today weekends are tied together
Bringing us back to what we adore,
Vitamin love which bathes our senses
Cooling thoughts as we beg for more;
I am tethered to the thought,
Clipped to the line
Drying out my socks
Letting my feet dangle
Over the edge of lake docks.

Today is a day for unlatching the cap,
Laughing and playing
Undoing the knots that have us tied;
No more waiting, no more delaying-
It is a celebration of family,
Good times and good play
With friends and neighbors
As we say,
Happy Canada Day!
